(1) Absorptive (or vital) stain : taken up by epithelial cells either by diffusion or absorption
(2) Reactive stain : react with a specific constituent of the mucosal epithelial cell or with acid secretion at a specific pH level
(3) Topical contrast stain : do not enter cells but percolate into mucosal depressions
