1929년과 1932년에 병리의사 Mallory와 내과의사 Weiss는 cardiac orfice of the stomach에 laceration 있다고 기술하였다. 당시에는 EG junction에 대한 해부학적 개념이 현재처럼 뚜렷하지 않았다. 그들이 cardiac orfice라고 쓴 것은 esophagogastric junction 언저리를 대강 말하는 것이 아니었나 생각된다. 내시경이 없던 당시로서는 Mallory-Weiss tear에서 정확히 어디가 찢어지는가는 알기 어려웠을 것이다.
아래 사진은 squamocolumnanr junction을 중간에 두고 그 상부와 그 하부가 찢어진 예이다. Mallory와 Weiss는 이런 경우를 보지 않았던 것일까 추정된다.
